WHAT WAS IT LIKE?
Nothing really prepares one for the reality of a huge iceberg which is larger than some islands I have visited. The colours on the different faces and sides of the peaks, which rose to a height of over 300m, changed constantly, and the various hues of blue, until it became a pure glistening white, shone in the sunlight as we passed into the fog which is now our world.
SKIRR Adventures: The Skipper’s Story
The conditions were harsh – we did get close to see the coast of Greenland, we could see the glaciers and the mountains but the ice proved to be too thick. It’d have been another week before the ice dispersed, so we went back to Reykjavik and our second approach to Scoresby Sund the reports was the ice was going to be scarce so we were able to push through and get to Scoresby Sund which was relatively ice free.
